Thoughts for the day

I read my articles and was putting finishing touches on my presentation today when I got a call that the host and his wife both tested positive for Covid. They had just returned from a Road Scholar trip. He had sent out an email and was not following up with a phone call. It’s OK, I’ll do it at our next meeting.

I grew up with the Rocky Mountain News and the Denver Post being delivered every day. My dad even trained our dogs to bring the paper in when it came. During the last days before an election, both parents (1 a Dem, 1 a Rep) would review who both papers endorsement and then make up their own minds.  I know it was only for perspective.

I was surprised when major newspapers announced they were not endorsing a candidate for president in this election. At least one of these papers leans left. I’m not sure if it just billionaires sticking together, or a fear that if they don’t endorse Trump, and Trump wins, they will pay a huge price. I don’t recognize this kind of journalism and to be honest, I fear for the free press…and maybe the Constitution if Trump is elected.

England, Wales, and Scotland are part of Great Britain; Great Britain and Northern Ireland make up the United Kingdom; the United Kingdom, Isle of Man, and the eight Channel Islands make up the British Islands; and the British Islands plus the Republic of Ireland make up the British Isles.

Benjamin Franklin, Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller, Henry Ford and Bill Gates had all, at least once during their lives, been the richest man in the world. They shared one thing in common – a father named William.

Native American Facts…

Native American Tribes Are Revitalizing Their Languages & Cultures

Despite centuries of cultural suppression and forced assimilation, Native American tribes are actively working to revitalize their languages and traditions. Many tribes have established language immersion schools, cultural centers, and youth programs to ensure their heritage is passed on to future generations.

The Hawai’ian language, for example, was once on the brink of extinction, but thanks to the efforts of Native Hawai’ian educators and activists, it is now taught in schools and universities across the islands.

Similarly, the Navajo Nation has implemented a comprehensive language revitalization program to ensure that the Navajo language remains a living, vibrant part of the community. These efforts demonstrate the resilience and determination of Native American peoples to maintain their cultural identities in the face of ongoing challenges.

As we celebrate the rich history and diverse cultures of Native American tribes, it is important to recognize the struggles they have faced and continue to face. By learning about these 20 surprising facts, we can gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for indigenous peoples’ contributions, resilience, and vitality.

Let us honor their legacy by supporting their ongoing fights for self-determination, cultural preservation, and social justice.

Thoughts for the day

President Biden gave what should become his most historic speech today. He apologized for the treatment of Native Americans between 1876-1969. Thankfully my career began in 1971, and I was part of the necessary changes.

I have a blood appointment at 2:15 today. Last night, @ 7:15pm I got an auto-text reminding me that I had that appointment at 8:00. No one to call so I was at the office at 7:45. The office lady checked and could not explain the text and said she would check up to see what happened. My roundtrip through morning traffic was a waste of time. Oh, well. Machines should not rule our lives.

I have reading to do for my presentation on ‘Invisible Indonesia’. Should be fun tomorrow.

Myth #4: Piranhas Will Attack Humans

Thanks to the silver screen, these Amazonian underwater dwellers have been painted as bloodthirsty monsters. But here’s the intriguing twist: piranhas are surprisingly bashful and prudent, often leaning towards scavenging rather than actively pursuing a taste for human flesh.

They much prefer nibbling on smaller fish or indulging in the occasional carrion feast. In fact, there’s not a single documented case of piranhas targeting and killing a human! With teeth that could easily slice through flesh, it’s theoretically possible for them to cause harm, but it’s about as likely as stumbling upon a unicorn during your Amazon adventure.

Native American Tribes Have a Rich Tradition of Storytelling

Storytelling has been an integral part of Native American cultures for thousands of years. These oral traditions serve to pass down knowledge, history, and values from one generation to the next. Many Native American stories are rich with symbolism, humor, and life lessons.

Some well-known Native American stories include the Iroquois creation story of Sky Woman, the Navajo tale of the Hero Twins, and the Lakota legend of White Buffalo Calf Woman. These stories not only entertain but also provide insight into the worldviews and beliefs of indigenous peoples.

Today, Native American storytellers continue to keep these traditions alive, sharing their stories with new generations and audiences.

1881 - A feud between the Earp brothers (Wyatt, Virgil, and Morgan) and an outlaw gang led by Ike Clanton escalated into a celebrated gunfight at the O.K. Corral in Tombstone, Arizona Territory.

1955 - A constitutional law of perpetual neutrality in Austria was promulgated.

Thoughts for the day

Now that I’m back in the groove of Flagstaff…

Yesterday morning I went for a blood draw. I usually get there by 7:30a but since my last visit the ultrasound now get in at 8am. I waited until 8:30 only to find out they were short-staffed and I would have to go back on Thursday at 8am. I got there today just before 8. The ultrasound lady showed up about 8:25. I was in out by 8:30. All good.

I’m already fed up with political commercials and political newscasts. The news keeps saying the race is neck-in-neck. I just don’t believe it. Maybe I’m naïve. How can it be so close when Trump is on the ballot? I think it is just clickbait to keep us watching the news. CNN, MSNBC, and Fox are all saying the same thing.

I honestly have more faith in the voters. I understand it will be close, but the neck-in-neck seems a big stretch.

Even with the minor injury and a little trouble walking on cobblestones, I am so glad I spent a great week with my relatives in Mexico. Our family bond is stronger than ever.

Native American Facts…

Native American Tribes Have Fought for Environmental Justice

Native American communities have long been at the forefront of the fight for environmental justice. Many tribes have faced disproportionate impacts from pollution, resource extraction, and climate change, as their lands and ways of life are often tied to the health of the environment.

In recent years, Native American activists have led high-profile campaigns against oil pipelines, coal mines, and other projects that threaten their communities and sacred sites.

The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe’s resistance to the Dakota Access Pipeline, for example, garnered international attention and solidarity. These struggles highlight the intersection of indigenous rights, environmental protection, and social justice.
