Thoughts for the day

A warm summer day.

I got my vehicle registration for 2 years, so I’m set.

This is such a difficult time for Texans after the historic flooding.

I did some major kitchen cleaning today. Things there look much better.

I have another treatment on Monday, so probably no blog.

Famous Quotes That People Have Always Misinterpreted

"I can see Russia from my house" – Sarah Palin

Today I Found Out writes, “Sarah Palin never said ‘I can see Russia from my house.’ Tina Fey did, in a hilarious skit on Saturday Night Live.” Palin’s actual statement was about how close Russia and Alaska are to each other. The quote is often used to critique her foreign policy credentials, even though it’s inaccurate.

Famous Historical Myths That People Still Believe Today

Vikings Wore Horned Helmets ©Telewizja Boleslawiec, 2018 on Wikimedia Commons

The classic image of a Viking wearing a horned helmet comes from operas, not history. Actual Viking helmets were simple and lacked horns. The idea of horned helmets likely started as a dramatic costume choice, not a historical fact.

Thoughts for the day

A great summer day. Warm, calm, and a very blue sky.

The Texas flooding is devastating. Nature can be brutal.

I watched the 45th Capitol 4th on PBS. It was well done and reminded me of the patriotism that built this country.  I also learned that there are 14 territories held by the USA. They are 5 inhabited…American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, United States Virgin Islands and…

9 uninhabited… Baker Island, Howland Island ,Jarvis Island, Johnston Atoll, Kingman Reef, Midway Atoll, Navassa Island, Palmyra Atoll, Wake Island

No wonder people are confused about the ‘big, beautiful bill. Trump keeps saying no tax on Social Security. Others say it is only a few who won’t pay tax on their SS. I’ve tried to find the truth, but don’t seem to be able to. Guess I’ll just wait until tax time to find out. I did find out about ‘no tax on tips’. That’s what Trump said, but it is only for people who earn less than $26,000/year and itemize their deductions on the Federal form. Sneaky.

Famous Quotes That People Have Always Misinterpreted

"Houston, we have a problem" – John Swigert

This quote was said by John Swigert, but it was misinterpreted. What Swigert actually said was, “Ok, Houston; we’ve had a problem here.” It’s thought that the misquote was due to Jim Lovell, who said the now famous “Houston, we have a problem” in the film Apollo 13.mous Historical Myths That People Still Believe

The Pyramids Were Built by Slaves ©Ricardo Liberato on Wikimedia Commons

Many believe the Egyptian pyramids were built by slaves, but evidence suggests otherwise. Archaeologists have found the tombs of workers who were well-fed and respected, not treated as slaves. The builders were likely skilled laborers who took pride in their work.

Thoughts for the day

The monsoon is giving our town a break for the holiday. Before leaving, there was a nice gentle rain around 9pm Thursday night.

There has been a large wildfire outside Window Rock, the Navajo Nation capital, and the council has cancelled all Independence Day parades, rodeos, and other events. The fire is also near Hunter’s Point. There is a BIA school there and I was on the accreditation team that approved that school back in the day.

Another executive order now will add an additional fee to all foreigners who visit a National Park in the US. No definite fee yet but is expected to be around $90/visitor.

I learned that many of the cuts to Medicaid will not take effect until after the 2026 midterm elections. That is kinda sneaky.

Famous Quotes That People Have Always Misinterpreted

"One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind" – Neil Armstrong©Photo Credit: Amateur007/Shutterstock

The quote actually includes an “a” before “man,” which was confirmed by Armstrong himself. The “a” was used to avoid any redundancy in the quote, and it does help it make more sense, as it was just one man who stepped on the moon. It’s thought the misinterpretation was due to the static in the audio transmission during the moon landing.

Famous Historical Myths That People Still Believe Today

The Statue of Liberty Was a Gift from Liberty ©Jakub HaÅ‚un on Wikimedia Commons

While France played a huge role in designing and funding the Statue of Liberty, it was not a gift, contrary to what people know. The U.S. had to raise money for the pedestal, and French citizens, not the government, funded the statue. It was a joint effort rather than a simple gift.
