In the 1906 Olympics,
male competitors fired dueling pistols at plaster dummies from 20m and 30m. In
1908 pistol dueling was demonstrated as part of the concurrent Franco-British
Exhibition, using the Olympic fencing arena and in front of invited guests. The
competition involved two male competitors firing at each other with dueling
pistols loaded with wax bullets and wearing protective equipment for the torso,
face, and hands. Teams were sent by countries including France, the UK and the
USA. The competition was won by the French team of Major Ferrus, J Marais and J
Rouvcanachi.

True Things
It's Bigfoot season
An Oklahoma state
representative introduced a bill that would establish a hunting season for one
of the state's most infamous species of alleged native wildlife: Bigfoot. Rep.
Justin Humphrey, R-District 19, introduced a bill to the state legislature that
would call on the Oklahoma Wildlife Commission to designate a Bigfoot hunting
season. The mythical ape has been the subject of numerous sightings in southern
Oklahoma for years, and the region hosts an annual Bigfoot festival for fans of
the cryptid. "The Oklahoma Wildlife Conservation Commission shall
promulgate rules establishing a Bigfoot hunting season. The Commission shall
set annual season dates and create any necessary specific hunting licenses and
fees," the bill states. The bill, if passed by the legislature and signed
by the governor, would take effect Nov. 1.

My Sometimes-Long-Winded Thoughts
Snow is melting quickly. Parking lot has very little snow either.
Nice!
This weather hasn’t stopped the smoke from pile burns around the
mountain. It is a good way to clean up the forest, better than raking. It is a
little unnerving to see plumes of smoke on the mountain. It even had the Forest
Service issue an alert that it is not necessary to call them or the fire department
regarding the pile burns. Yesterday I
counted 4 huge plumes of smoke on my side of the mountain.
Months ago, the Census was slowed with Covid, and then with Trump.
Now, the Census Bureau is requesting more time before releasing information.
This has placed many states in a bind. They have a legal deadline to draw new
Congressional Districts based on the 2020 census. Without information they can’t
draw lines. Many states have a deadline, which now will not be reached. State
legislatures have to amend current law. It is made even more difficult because
the Census Bureau hasn’t given itself a date to release the information. This
is all because the previous administration believed that ‘count every person’
meant ‘do not count illegal immigrants’. What a mess.
A friend recently lost his father to Covid. The funeral home places
the body in a special bag in a special sealed casket and will hold the service
in the mortuary parking lot with social distancing. Only 10 people can attend
the burial. My friend’s boss is genuinely concerned about Covid and may decide
to fire my friend if he attends the funeral. The family has said they
understand if he does not attend. What a decision for a family member to have
to make. Sad.
