My Sometimes-Long-Winded
Thoughts
Fall
continues. Cool and windy today. Mary and I met
for an outdoor lunch. We were protected from the wind and had great food and
good conversation. We need to
required Civics classes in schools. Units in Elementary and Middle School and
full-blown Civics in High School. The last couple of generations have had no
such training…and it shows. For example: the Bill of Rights is an addition to
the to the Constitution. These documents lay out the powers of the states and
the powers of the Federal Government. It is not about the powers of individual non-government
corporations or businesses. Social Media can make its own rules about what
can be part of their business model because they are private. For example, a
dating site might decide it will only allow people 18-25 to become members.
No problem…except they are limiting their business model. When a site kicks
off a member for violating its rules, it usually has little to do with the
Constitution or Bill of Rights. There might be a case if it can be proven in
court that they only are kicking off members who are not Brown. A jewelry
store might only allow customers into the store who are wearing at last 2 carats
of diamonds. Not a problem. If a Black lady was denied entrance, even though
she had the required diamonds would be a problem. I wish more people knew the
difference. |
