Today’s Thoughts
A
hot day for sure. That means the monsoons better get here soon to prevent more
fires.
I
am getting better every day. Decided to miss the smalltown parade…my face is
still droopy.
Auto
correct struck again…I have a case of Bell’s Palsy. Dr. says it is probably the
recent virus that messed me up. It sure is very visible and I have gotten some
weird looks. I am sleeping through the night again…only got up once the last
two nights. That is very nice.
I
still remember the days when most stores were closed on July 4th so
employees were able to spend time with family. I also remember when single employees
were asked to ‘volunteer’ to work and as an incentive I got triple time for an
8 hour shift. Now I’m sure no one is ‘asked’ to work…it is just part of the
job.

Idioms explained…
Cup
of Joe
Many
believe this is the most likely explanation for the term. Josephus Daniels was
the U.S. Naval secretary between 1913 to 1921. When he accepted his title, the
Navy was notorious for free-flowing booze and had a bit of a rowdy reputation.
In an attempt to clean up ship, Joe banned all alcohol in 1914. It’s at this
time that many believe the term “cup of joe” surfaced by sailors who criticized
the ban and were drinking coffee as a less than exciting replacement.
Random Trivia…
The most common wild bird in the world isn’t
the sparrow or blue jay—it’s the red-billed quelea, which live in Africa and
have an estimated population of 1.5 billion. (audubon.org)
