Today’s Thoughts
The
monsoon returned last evening, giving a nice shower for several hours.
A
few weeks ago I noticed that one of the valve caps on a front tire was missing.
I figured that the dealership would replace it when I had the tire rotation.
Wrong. This morning I stopped by Auto Zone and had to buy 4. The ones I got are
made of metal, not plastic so I hope they stay on.
There
was a big fire in building in Johannesburg, South Africa. When our travel group
was there years ago, this was the only city where we were told not to leave the
hotel after dark due the high crime rate. The more I learn about the fire, the more
horrified I am. First it was a multi-story building that had been abandoned
year ago. Criminal gangs took over the building that had no running water or electricity.
Since many are homeless in the city, the gangs rented out the rooms in the
building. The night of the fire 54 innocents perished. Turns out there are many
such abandoned building in this city, being used as ‘apartments’ for the homeless
who pay rent to the criminal gangs. I have found nothing on why the city or
state government isn’t stopping this practice in South Africa’s largest city. This
is not the South Africa of Mandella or the city I saw.

Random Trivia…
100 million years ago, the Sahara Desert was inhabited by
galloping crocodiles. Back then, the Sahara Desert was a lush oasis full
of life and full of predators. In 2009, fossil hunters found the
remains of crocodiles that had large land-going legs that were capable of
galloping across the land at breakneck speeds!
