Today’s Thoughts

Sunshine and blue sky…couldn’t ask for more.

I got busy yesterday and by the time I got home, I was too tired to post anything.

Yesterday I did some shopping and then met up with Faith and Andy for a nice lunch. They were just back from Phx. Andy’s brother is still in rehab as Andy deals with the medical personnel. They are giving his brother meds to stop his seizures. Andy thinks they need to reevaluate his meds, but the Dr., the rehab center, the hospital in Phx and HIS aren’t communicating very well. It is a daunting task, but both Andy and Faith worked for the Bureau and know how to handle a bureaucracy.

Circle K has a promotion to start summer driving and yesterday between 4p and 7p regular gas was had a 40 cents discount. I went over about 4:15. I filled up my tank at $3.79/gallon. Been quite a while since I’ve seen gas that cheap. I only had about a 5-min. wait for an open pump. I told a couple of friends and both said it sounded ‘sketchy’. I agreed but told them to check the website.

Happy to see the new Jeopardy Masters Champion. I’m a real jeopardy fan since I was in Jr. High. Watching the historical best and most-wins competitors has been very entertaining.

Yesterday there was a 19-acre wildfire near Sedona. By this morning it was 33-acres. It is in rough, steep terrain. I hope they get hold of it soon.

A few weeks ago, I got a new Visa card that pays better cash-back than the one I had. I am in the process of changing all my bills to that new card. This morning I went the APS (Az Public Service) to change my payment. Every time I got blocked from putting in a credit card. I called and after 2+ hours I think it is changed. After three phone center people and two different techs at their credit card provider, a supervisor finally did it. The good outcome is that I remained calm with every new person. When I finally got a supervisor, she simply went on my account and changed it. She apologized and marked my current bill of $75 as paid. I did keep reminding each new person that it was 2023 and not 1970 when it comes to internet payments.

Origins of State Names

South Carolina

It’s no surprise that South Carolina shares an origin story with North Carolina, as described above. Despite this, South Carolina possesses a unique identity and southern charm that differentiate it from its neighbor to the North.
South Dakota
Once again, there’s no unique origin story for South Dakota, as it shares that history with North Dakota. But what makes South Dakota particularly stunning compared to its northern neighbor are South Dakota’s
Black Hills and Badlands that make it a must-visit site for nature lovers.

Today’s Thoughts

Blue sky, just a breeze, can’t ask for any better weather.

Sad to read of the passing of Music Icon Tina Turner at 83. Her songs live on.

As more Republicans enter the 2024 Presidential Primary, remember, at this time in 2016 Trump was polling at 3% for the Primary.

US military has killed a civilian with a drone strike on Syrian land. The ‘current’ story is that the target was Syrian terrorist. I have to wonder if we will ever know the truth or if the US will pay the Syrian farmer’s family for the untimely death. Hmmm.

Dr. Jacob Weasel, 36, a member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe and a surgeon at Monument Health in Rapid City, has become the first Native American to summit Mount Everest.

Ocean Trivia

The UNESCO World Heritage Site off the coast of Queensland is the world’s largest coral system, composed of over 2,900 of its namesake items and 900 islands: Great Barrier Reef, so named in 1981.

Origins of State Names

Rhode Island

You’ll have to forgive early explorers for assuming Rhode Island was an island. The New England state’s official stance on the origin of its name is that Dutch explorer Adriaen Block, on his 1614 expedition, called it "Roodt Eylandt” ("red island”) after seeing the red clay that lined the shore. One other popular theory however, is that explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano anchored near present-day Providence and compared the region to the Greek island of Rhodes. Though it’s not an island, Rhode Island still offers incredible oceanside views of the Atlantic that have earned it the very appropriate nickname, the Ocean State.

  • 1977 – Chinese government removed the ban on the works of William Shakespeare, the biggest entertainment juggernaut in the Elizabethan era.

Today’s Thoughts

Very few clouds, guess the weather guy was right, monsoon on a break.

While I was out and about, I got my car washed. Taking advantage of the monthly deal.

Super typhoon Mawar is heading for Guam. There may be 157mph winds and 25’ waves. It’s exact path isn’t know yet.

Ash from Popocatépetl volcano, which is in a central part of Mexico, has delayed flights in Mexico City and led authorities to close schools in dozens of municipalities. There are 25 million people living in a 60-mile radius of the volcano.

Only in AZ. Kari Lake lost the election. She just lost her final trial to prove that she won the election. Almost immediately after that announcement, the Republican leader of the Senate declared that AZ counties could no longer use any machines to count votes in all elections.  He was quickly reminded that his declaration did not have the rule of law behind it and was just issued to confuse voters.

Ocean Trivia

The Vampire squid gets its name not because it has a taste for blood but from the dark skin on its arms that makes it look like it’s wearing a Dracula-esque cape.

Origins of State Names

Pennsylvania

While Pennsylvania played a key role in helping to achieve American independence, its name has less to do with its political history and more with the state’s lush greenery. The Province of Pennsylvania — a name meaning “Penn’s Woods” — was inspired by the surname of its founder, William Penn, and also by the new province's forests, sylva (or “forest trees”). Penn envisioned a “a green country town” that encouraged religious freedom, which in turn led to Pennsylvania becoming one of the most culturally diverse among the 13 original colonies.

  • 1958 – United Press International (UPI) was formed through a merger of the United Press and the International News Service.

“There is nothing more personal than your values. What you will and won’t do to get ahead, the lines you will and won’t cross to win, whom you will and won’t step on for personal gain, are at the very core of your code of honor. And your code of honor determines your character. And your character is who you are. Behind closed doors. When nobody is watching.”– Patti LaBelle

“When one of Lisa’s baby teeth fell out here, the tooth fairy left her 50 cents. Another tooth fell out when she was with her father in Las Vegas, and that tooth fairy left her $5. When I told Elvis that 50 cents would be more in line, he laughed. He knew I was not criticizing him; how would Elvis Presley know the going rate for a tooth?”– Priscilla Presley
58 – John C. Reilly, American character actor

But I still wasn’t believing it – I thought they were setting me up for a TV practical jokes show.”– Heavy Ds
