Another very warm day. Weather guy no monsoon yet in the forecast. We need rain.

The Fire Watch is in effect through Friday…be careful in the forest.

I watched the Capitol 4^th on PBS last night. Seeing Chicago perform their hits from 50 years ago…their unique sound sure brought back memories. Even the younger crowd got into their sound.

I grew up in a time when the July 5^th stories were about Fireworks Accidents…some at shows, others in people’s backyard. For the past few years, the headlines have been about mass shootings at various venues throughout the US. Such a sad state of affairs.

A hot day for sure. That means the monsoons better get here soon to prevent more fires.

I am getting better every day. Decided to miss the smalltown parade…my face is still droopy.

Auto correct struck again…I have a case of Bell’s Palsy. Dr. says it is probably the recent virus that messed me up. It sure is very visible and I have gotten some weird looks. I am sleeping through the night again…only got up once the last two nights. That is very nice.

I still remember the days when most stores were closed on July 4^th so employees were able to spend time with family. I also remember when single employees were asked to ‘volunteer’ to work and as an incentive I got triple time for an 8 hour shift. Now I’m sure no one is ‘asked’ to work…it is just part of the job.

Cup of Joe

Many believe this is the most likely explanation for the term. Josephus Daniels was the U.S. Naval secretary between 1913 to 1921. When he accepted his title, the Navy was notorious for free-flowing booze and had a bit of a rowdy reputation. In an attempt to clean up ship, Joe banned all alcohol in 1914. It’s at this time that many believe the term “cup of joe” surfaced by sailors who criticized the ban and were drinking coffee as a less than exciting replacement.

I did a quick phlebotomy this afternoon. Went well. Happy Camper.

I woke up Sunday with Ball’s Plassey. I saw the doctor this morning. Have some meds and it should be gone by Friday. Here’s hoping. It is not a look I want to keep.  No pain, which is good.

Cuba and great boxers is historical. I just learned that Castro had outlawed all Professional Boxing because it took advantage of young boxers that gave money to the owners. Today Cuba has now OK’d some professional boxing in Cuba.

Yesterday, Ricky Fowler, the Navajo golfer won the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit. Congrats

Head in the Clouds

In the early 1600s, this phrase was used to describe a person who was really disconnected from the real world.

Clouds are associated with heaven, as well as fog and fuzziness, and clouds are also high up in the sky. Someone with their “head in the clouds” has lost sight of reality on the ground and has entered a dream-like state.

A nice Sunday. Took a nice walk around the neighborhood. Getting warmer by the minute.

Last night there was another mass shooting…this time in Baltimore, MD. Black mayor thanked their many partners for helping. He added this is a problem that permeates the US. It will only end when it is dealt with at the national level. So true.

There is lots of tourist traffic in town. Lots of celebration activities. I hope this helps our local economy. The nearest fireworks will be at the Navajo Casino, about 20 miles from town. Our town gave up on local fireworks about 15 years ago…due to the drought.

Idioms explained…

Cat Got Your Tongue
The origin of the idiom ‘cat got your tongue’ is an intriguing one. Although many believe the “cat” in question is of the feline variety, it’s actually the cat o’ nine tails, a whip commonly used to flog sailors who misbehaved.
On English sailing ships, anyone entrusted with a secret by a higher officer would be threatened with “the cat” for telling; thus, the saying ‘has the cat got your tongue?’ became slang for ‘are you afraid to tell?’
